What Changes to the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy means for Employers - 10:00 am on Thursday, August 6, 2020 On July 21, the House of Commons passed Bill C-20, an Act respecting further COVID-19 measures which makes a number of significant changes to the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy ("CEWS") program including making the wage subsidies more accessible to businesses and extending its availability to December 19, 2020.
The Bill provides for a base subsidy available to all eligible employers experiencing a revenue decline with the subsidy amount varying depending on the scale of the revenue decline. The government has also introduced a new top-up subsidy for those employers most adversely affected by the pandemic. Not surprisingly, however, the applicable formulas, claim periods and limitations are confusing.
